Each of us has a story to tell. More than simply a series of historical set of facts, events, and dates, our life-story is a three-dimensional history that contains and communicates something about the silent and hidden knowledge(s) that mysteriously influence and shape our everyday decisions and guide us in our movements through life.   Telling one’s story to another provides the opportunity to see, understand, and come to know something more about the rhythms and rhymes and meanings and purposes of our stories, decisions, and movements through life.
For nearly fifty years, Dr. Kavanaugh has been meeting and working with people to more deeply understand their life stories, experiences, and situations. His philosophy and practice centers on the idea that the stories of our life are the sacred narratives of our existence: they tell us who we are, where we came from, and often reveal where we might be headed -and why.
As a storytelling conversation, therapy is understood as a collaborative venture guided by humanistic values and principles. It readily acknowledges the inexplicable nature of human being-ness and the mystery, magic and muscle of the human spirit. And it takes place in the context of strict confidentiality.
As such, the therapeutic discourse falls outside of a medical-scientific therapy concerned with diagnosis, treatment, progress notes, and curing (or healing) a mental disease, disorder or disturbance. Rather, it understands depression, loneliness, and interpersonal difficulties as the “stuff of life” –as opposed to “evidences of pathology.”
Situated in philosophy, the humanities and the arts -as opposed to medicine, biology, and the natural sciences, psychotherapy has to do with addressing problems in living and taking care of the soul as opposed to evidences of pathology and reducing symptoms. In so doing, we might come to know something more about that which matters and has meaning for us in life.
